How to Remove Deep Scratches from Car permanently – Easy Step Guide

Posted on December 06, 2021 / by Paul Marsh / 0 comment

We all know how easily our car paint gets scratched. Even the newest ones get scratched out of nowhere. To save you time and energy, we are here to spill a secret. You can fix minor scratches on your vehicle without the help of a professional.

Before you get on with the entire fixing process, you need to run your fingernail across the scratch. In case your nail glides across the scratch without getting into it, it’s detected as a minor scratch and that can be easily polished out. However, if the scratch catches your nail, you will need to see professionals get it fixed.

If your scratch falls in the ‘gliding category’, you can go ahead with the process. For this, you will need 3,000-grit sandpaper, rubbing and polishing compound and polishing pads. You will also require a portable drill or dual action polisher unit. You will get these products at any regular auto parts store. Another item that helps in fixing the scratches is gel-free toothpaste. If you are not too confident in fixing your own car, you can always take the help of a nearby car repair centre.

Step 1: With the help of sandpaper, sand the car scratches lightly. Do this process until it looks dull and the scratch is no longer visible. Now, wipe off the surface with a microfiber towel and clean it.

Step 2: Take the compound onto the polishing pad and start rubbing it on the surface. Then at 1200 rpm, drill until you get a light haze. You can also run polisher. The polishing compound will help you get back the shine.

Small Car Scratches

Exactly like how we did earlier, you need to run your fingernail on the scratched surface to analyze it. Remeber that small scratches are big enough to stop your fingernail in the scratch test. Such scratches reach the base coat. However, you need not worry, we have a solution for this too. Before you get onto this, remember to wash your car to get rid of all the dirt.

You will need:

  • Microfiber Towel
  • Polishing Compound
  • Rubbing Compound

Step 1: Take a quarter-sized bead onto the scrubbing pad and apply it on the scratched surface. Rub it on the scratched areas as well as the surrounding surface. Make sure you do it correctly so that it does not make the scratch worse.

Step 2: Wipe off the residue with the help of a microfiber cloth. Make sure the surface is squeaky clean so that you can follow the upcoming steps at ease.

Step 3: Practice the previous steps two to three times more. You might witness a slight difference after each time you perform the step. Follow the steps and you will notice that the scratch is quite difficult to see.

How to Fix Deep Car Scratches?

Fix Deep Car Scratches

We know that earlier we said that you will need the help of a professional to fix a deep car scratch. However, in a lot of cases, you can still fix it with the right tools. In this process, you need to wash your car thoroughly so that there is no dirt and dust. However, if the scratch is way too heavy, you need to look for a car body detailing service in the UK.

You will need:

  • Sandpaper
  • Polishing Pad
  • Microfiber Towel
  • Masking Tape
  • Paper
  • Car Wax

Step 1: With 2,000-grit sandpaper, sand the scratched area thoroughly. Sand the body until you reach the metal pane. Make sure you scratch always in the direction of the scratch. Avoid making any more scratches otherwise, it will become a more time-taking process.

Step 2: Apply masking tape on the surface to avoid any spread of the paint or primer on the rest of the car body. Spray your primer onto the area and let it dry for some time. The next step will require you to paint. It can get a bit challenging to find the perfect shade, but this is where your manufacturer’s manual will come to the rescue. You can find the colour code there that matches the paint. Apply a heavy amount of paint on the area and let it dry.

Step 3: It is now time to match the newly painted area with the rest of the car body. Polish the spot to make the scratched area look the part of your car. Apply a quarter-sized bead onto a polishing pad or a microfiber towel and rub it on the surface in a circular motion. Do this process until all the polish is removed.

Since you cannot go to the car repair store now and then for tiny scratches, the above-mentioned steps are tried and tested by professionals to help you do it yourself.
